The Knox Raiders VYCW defeated the Hawthorn Magic while the men had a comfortable 17-point win over the Ringwood Hawks.

The VYCW got off to a flying start against Hawthorn on the road on Saturday night scoring 22 points in the first quarter including 3 three-point field goals from Sophie Rourke and Meagan Wylie.

Hawthorn hung tough in the first half trading baskets with Knox but the Raiders trademark full court defence took over the game restricting the Magic to only seven-second half points.

Coach Rob Baldwin credits the team defence in the second half for the 67-37 final scoreline.

“A great defensive effort in the second half by all 12 players, it shows the dominance of the group,” he said.

Meagan Wylie scored 12 points to lead the scoring for Knox while Bec Ott (11 points) and Sophie Rourke (10 points) both contributed solid performances.

Knox will now take on the Geelong Supercats this Saturday night at Boronia, tip off 7:00pm.

The VYCM have improved to a 12-4 record after a 89-72 win over the Ringwood Hawks on Sunday.

The Hawks made the short trip to Boronia full of confidence after winning 5 out of their last six games and it showed as they traded baskets with the Raiders the entire first half.

The third quarter saw Knox break down on the offensive end settling for poor shots and not executing which allowed Ringwood to take the lead. The Raiders were able to respond at the end of the third to regain the lead while a 28-18 final term sealed the much needed win for the Raiders who are desperately trying to seal a top two spot.

Ben Waterhouse scored a game high 28 points and credits the team for the win.

“It was a great team effort and a good show of character against a team that played super hard,” he said.

Dylan Hare and Mitch Unwin both scored 18 points apiece while DJ Horstman chipped in with 11 points of his own.

Coach Brett Atley believes the team’s defence got them back in the game.

“To our credit the team rallied and worked hard on the defensive end which in turn facilitated our offence.”

The VYCM play Melbourne Tigers away this Sunday looking to win their sixth consecutive game and solidify a finals position.
